Separation Anxiety is an intense fear or distress triggered by the prospect of being separated from a specific person or people, typically a close attachment figure such as a partner, parent, child or close friend.
While it is most commonly associated with young children, Separation Anxiety Disorder is a recognised clinical condition that affects a significant number of adults too.
In adults, separation anxiety often goes unrecognised because it is mistaken for clinginess, jealousy or emotional dependency. In reality, it is a deeply uncomfortable anxiety condition rooted in fear of abandonment, loss or harm coming to the person they are attached to. It can severely impact relationships, work and daily functioning.
Separation anxiety in adults often has its roots in early attachment experiences, childhood loss, trauma or significant life events. It can develop or worsen following relationship breakdown, bereavement, moving away from home or other major transitions. In children, it is often triggered by starting school, parental separation or a significant change in family circumstances.
Intense distress when separated or anticipating separation from an attachment figure
Persistent, excessive worry about harm coming to the person you are attached to
Reluctance or refusal to be apart from a loved one for any length of time
Difficulty sleeping alone or away from the attachment figure
Physical symptoms including panic, nausea, headaches and shortness of breath when separated
Constant checking in via calls, messages or tracking
Avoiding situations that require separation such as travel, work or social events
Fear of being left alone even for short periods
Intrusive thoughts about loss, abandonment or something bad happening
Significant impact on relationships, work and independence
Separation anxiety
is more common than many people realise and it is highly treatable.
Hypnotherapy & NLP offers the most effective routes to lasting recovery, addressing the deep emotional roots of the condition rather than simply managing the surface symptoms.
Separation anxiety is rooted in the subconscious mind. It is driven by deep emotional beliefs about safety, attachment, loss and self-worth that were often formed early in life.
These beliefs operate automatically and powerfully, which is why rational reassurance rarely resolves the condition on its own. Hypnotherapy and NLP are uniquely positioned to reach these deeper layers of the mind and create meaningful, lasting change.
By working at the subconscious level, hypnotherapy can identify and resolve the core beliefs and experiences that created the fear of separation. It rewires the emotional response to being apart from loved ones, replacing anxiety with a sense of security, calm and inner confidence that does not depend on the constant presence of another person.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify the original experiences and beliefs driving separation anxiety
Process and resolve unresolved loss, abandonment or attachment trauma
Break the automatic anxiety response to separation
Build a strong, stable sense of inner security and self-worth
Develop confidence and independence that does not rely on constant reassurance
Reduce compulsive checking and monitoring behaviour
Improve sleep and the ability to be comfortably alone
Teach self-hypnosis and calming techniques for use between sessions
Create lasting emotional resilience and security
Many clients experience a significant shift in their sense of security and emotional independence within the first few sessions.
The underlying fear begins to dissolve and relationships become healthier, more balanced and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, usually available within 24 hours of contacting us.
Your therapist will take time to understand the full picture of your separation anxiety, its history, its triggers and how it is affecting your relationships and daily life.
From this, a personalised treatment programme is built specifically around you.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Most clients see meaningful improvement within 3 to 6 sessions, though this varies depending on individual circumstances. Hypnosis is simply an enjoyable state of focused relaxation.

A: Yes. While separation anxiety is commonly associated with children, it is a recognised clinical condition in adults. Adult separation anxiety involves intense, excessive fear of being apart from a close attachment figure such as a partner, parent or child. It is more common than many people realise and responds very well to hypnotherapy.
A: Adult separation anxiety is often rooted in early attachment experiences, childhood loss or trauma, previous relationship breakdowns, bereavement or significant life transitions. The subconscious mind has learned to associate separation with danger or loss and responds with anxiety to protect against this perceived threat.
A: It is normal to feel some concern for people we care about. Separation Anxiety Disorder is diagnosed when this fear is persistent, excessive and significantly interferes with daily life, relationships and functioning. The distress is disproportionate to the actual risk and does not respond to rational reassurance.
A: Yes. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for separation anxiety because it works at the subconscious level where the anxiety is created and maintained. It resolves the underlying attachment beliefs and emotional patterns that drive the anxiety, rather than just teaching coping strategies.
A: Most clients see meaningful improvement within 3 to 6 sessions. The number varies depending on the severity and duration of the anxiety. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during your initial assessment.
A: Yes. We offer fully online hypnotherapy via video call, which is just as effective as attending in person and is available to clients anywhere in the UK.
