Working With Children & Adults
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges facing children and young people today.
It is completely normal for children to feel worried or afraid at times. But when anxiety becomes persistent, disproportionate to the situation, or starts to affect a child's ability to attend school, make friends, sleep, eat or enjoy everyday life, it is a signal that specialist support is needed.
Children experience anxiety in many of the same ways as adults, but they often lack the vocabulary or insight to explain what they are feeling. Instead, anxiety in children frequently shows up as physical complaints such as stomach aches or headaches, behaviour changes, clinginess, refusal to attend school, meltdowns, sleep problems, or the development of specific fears and avoidance behaviours. Parents often sense that something is wrong long before the child can articulate it.
Childhood anxiety should never be dismissed as a phase or something they will grow out of.
Without appropriate support, anxiety in children tends to deepen and widen over time, affecting more areas of life and becoming harder to shift. With the right specialist help at the right time, children are remarkably responsive to treatment and can achieve significant and lasting recovery.
At Newcastle Hypnotherapy, we have extensive experience working with anxious children and young people across a wide range of anxiety presentations. Our approach is entirely child-centred, gentle and non-pressuring. We work in close partnership with parents throughout treatment, because children recover best when their family understands what is happening and how to support progress at home.
Refusing to go to school or becoming extremely distressed at separation
Frequent stomach aches, headaches or feeling sick with no medical cause
Excessive worrying about things going wrong, getting ill or something bad happening
Nightmares, difficulty sleeping or fear of sleeping alone
Clinginess, emotional outbursts or regressive behaviour
Avoidance of social situations, parties or activities they previously enjoyed
Specific fears that are disproportionate and significantly limit normal activities
Repeated reassurance-seeking from parents about health, safety or the future
Difficulty concentrating at school or a sudden drop in academic performance
Physical complaints before school, tests, sports events or social situations
Children are naturally imaginative, open and receptive to hypnotherapy in a way that makes the approach particularly powerful for this age group. The subconscious mind, which is where anxiety is created and maintained, is highly accessible in children. This is why hypnotherapy often produces faster and more dramatic results in younger clients than in adults.
Hypnotherapy for children does not look like the stage hypnosis portrayed on television.
It is simply a state of focused, relaxed attention, similar to the absorbed state children enter when they are listening to a story, playing imaginatively or deeply engaged in something they enjoy. In this natural, receptive state, gentle and age-appropriate therapeutic techniques are used to reduce anxiety, build confidence and create positive new associations and responses.
Our therapists are experienced at adapting every aspect of the session to suit the age, personality and interests of the child. Younger children may engage through stories, imagery and play-based approaches. Older children and teenagers are worked with in a more direct, conversational style. The child is always in full control and there is never any pressure.
Identify the root causes and triggers of your child's anxiety in a safe, gentle way
Reduce the automatic fear or worry response at a subconscious level
Build a deep sense of safety, calm and confidence
Develop age-appropriate coping tools and self-calming techniques
Address specific fears, phobias or avoidance behaviours directly
Rebuild confidence in situations the child has been avoiding
Support positive school, social and family experiences
Teach simple self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques the child can use independently
Help the child develop a more secure, confident sense of themselves
Parents are involved throughout the treatment process.
At the initial assessment we take time to understand the full picture from both the parents' perspective and the child's.
We provide guidance to parents on how to support progress at home between sessions, what to avoid and how to respond to anxiety in ways that help rather than reinforce it.
Children recover best when parents and therapist are working as a team.
Treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
This initial session involves both the parents and the child and is designed to be completely relaxed and non-threatening. We take the time to understand the anxiety fully before beginning treatment. Your child will never be pushed, pressured or made to feel they have to do anything before they feel ready.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions varies depending on the child's age, the nature and severity of the anxiety and how long it has been present. Many children see significant improvement within 4 to 8 sessions. Progress is reviewed throughout and parents are kept closely involved at every stage.
School anxiety is one of the most common reasons parents bring their child to us.
Whether your child becomes extremely distressed at drop-off, develops physical symptoms every morning, or is refusing to attend school entirely, hypnotherapy addresses the underlying anxiety driving the avoidance and helps your child return to school with genuine confidence.
It is normal for young children to experience some distress when separated from parents, but when separation anxiety is severe, persistent or age-inappropriate, it significantly limits family life.
Hypnotherapy helps the child build an internal sense of safety and security that does not depend entirely on the presence of the parent, reducing distress and supporting independence.
Emetophobia, the fear of being sick or seeing others be sick, is surprisingly common in children and can be highly restrictive.
It frequently drives food avoidance, school refusal and withdrawal from social activities. Our therapists are experienced in working with this specific fear in young people and achieve excellent results.
Fear of swallowing or choking is a specific anxiety that can develop rapidly in children, often following a choking incident, illness or a frightening experience at mealtimes. It can lead to significant food restriction and family distress. Hypnotherapy gently resolves the anxiety response around eating and swallowing, rebuilding a relaxed, safe relationship with food.
Bullying can leave children with lasting anxiety, low self-esteem, fear of social situations and reluctance to attend school.
Even when the bullying has stopped, the anxiety it created often persists. Hypnotherapy helps process the emotional impact of bullying, rebuild confidence and self-worth and develop the inner resilience to navigate social challenges.
Exam anxiety prevents many intelligent, capable children from performing to their true ability.
When a child who knows their material freezes during tests, goes blank or becomes overwhelmed before exams, the problem is not ability but anxiety. Hypnotherapy directly addresses the anxiety response and allows your child's real knowledge and ability to come through when it counts.
Whether it is a school play, a sports event, a music performance or any situation where a child feels watched or evaluated, performance anxiety can cause significant distress.
Hypnotherapy removes the fear response and helps children perform with the freedom, enjoyment and confidence that these experiences should bring.
Some children find social situations intensely anxiety-provoking.
They may struggle to speak to other children, avoid parties and group activities, or become extremely withdrawn in unfamiliar social settings. Hypnotherapy builds social confidence at a subconscious level and helps children engage with their peers more freely and naturally.
Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder in which a child is unable to speak in certain social situations despite speaking normally at home. It is most commonly identified when children start school. Our team has specific experience with Selective Mutism and uses a gentle, entirely non-pressuring approach that allows speech to return naturally as the anxiety reduces.
Children can develop intense, disproportionate fears of almost anything, including animals, insects, needles, the dark, storms, dogs, loud noises, sick people, or being alone. When a specific phobia begins to limit normal childhood activities, hypnotherapy is one of the most effective treatments available and typically produces rapid, lasting results.
Some children worry about everything. They catastrophise, seek constant reassurance, struggle to switch off and find it hard to enjoy the present because they are consumed by worry about what might go wrong.
Hypnotherapy addresses the underlying anxiety driving generalised worry and helps the child develop a calmer, more grounded and secure relationship with everyday life.
Anxiety frequently disrupts children's sleep, causing difficulty settling, fear of the dark, nightmares, night terrors, or refusal to sleep alone. Poor sleep worsens anxiety, creating a difficult cycle. Hypnotherapy helps the child's mind and body associate sleep with safety and calm, breaking the cycle and restoring restful, confident sleep.
Health anxiety in children involves excessive worry about illness, physical symptoms or the possibility of something being seriously wrong. It often manifests as frequent complaints of physical symptoms, repeated requests for reassurance and significant distress about body sensations. Hypnotherapy addresses the anxiety underlying the health worry, not just the symptoms.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in children involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts that create intense anxiety and compulsive behaviours that temporarily relieve it. It can manifest as checking, counting, repetitive rituals or the need for things to be a certain way. OCD in children responds well to hypnotherapy because it works directly with the subconscious patterns that maintain the obsessive cycle.
Our team has extensive experience working with children and young people across a wide range of anxiety presentations. We understand the specific way anxiety manifests in children at different developmental stages and adapt our approach accordingly. You will be working with therapists who are genuinely skilled at building rapport with young clients and making sessions feel safe, engaging and productive.
We do not treat children in isolation. Parents are involved at every stage, from the initial assessment through to the end of treatment. We take time to ensure parents understand what is driving their child's anxiety and how to support recovery at home. Children make the fastest progress when parents and therapist are aligned and working together.

A: Hypnotherapy can be effective with children from around the age of 7 upwards, though this varies depending on the child's maturity and ability to engage with the process. Younger children can also benefit from adapted, play-based approaches. We assess the most appropriate approach for each child during the initial consultation.
A: Yes. Hypnotherapy is completely safe for children. It is a natural, relaxed state of focused attention, not unlike the absorbed state children enter when they are deeply engaged in play or listening to a story. There are no drugs, no side effects and the child is always in full control. Our therapists are experienced at creating a completely safe, comfortable and reassuring experience for young clients.
A: Absolutely not. Our approach is entirely child-led and non-pressuring. Sessions are adapted to the pace and comfort level of the individual child. If a child does not want to engage with something, we simply work differently. Building trust and a sense of safety is the foundation of everything we do with young clients.
Very involved. Parents are present for the initial assessment and we work closely with you throughout treatment. We provide guidance on how to support your child at home, what helps and what unintentionally makes anxiety worse. Children recover best when parents understand the process and are actively supporting progress between sessions.
A: Yes. One of the significant advantages of hypnotherapy for children is that it does not require the child to be able to articulate or explain their anxiety. The therapeutic work happens at a subconscious level, which means children who are unable or unwilling to discuss how they feel can still benefit enormously.
This varies depending on the child's age, the nature of the anxiety and how long it has been present. Many children see significant improvement within 4 to 8 sessions. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during the initial assessment and review progress throughout treatment.
A: Yes. Online hypnotherapy via video call is available and works very well for children, particularly those who are anxious about attending a new place or whose anxiety makes leaving home difficult. Online sessions are just as effective as attending in person.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible availability including evenings and weekends to accommodate school and family schedules.
Childhood anxiety does not have to limit your child's world, their education or their happiness.
