Dental anxiety is intense fear, dread or panic associated with dental visits, dental procedures or any aspect of dental care.
It ranges from significant unease that makes dental appointments deeply unpleasant, through to full dental phobia in which the anxiety is so overwhelming that the person avoids the dentist entirely, sometimes for years or even decades.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common forms of specific anxiety, affecting an estimated one in five adults in the UK to some degree. Despite its prevalence, it is often dismissed or minimised. People are told to simply get on with it or that their fear is irrational. This is both unhelpful and incorrect.
Dental anxiety is a genuine anxiety condition, rooted in the same subconscious fear mechanisms as any other phobia, and it responds very well to the right specialist treatment.
The consequences of untreated dental anxiety go beyond discomfort. Avoiding the dentist leads to deteriorating oral health, which in turn creates more complex and potentially more distressing dental needs. Many people with dental anxiety find themselves trapped in a cycle where avoidance leads to worse oral health, which increases shame and anxiety about the dentist, which leads to further avoidance. Breaking this cycle with effective treatment can transform both dental health and quality of life.
Dental anxiety can develop following a painful or distressing dental experience, after medical trauma or a difficult procedure, through conditioning in childhood, or with no clear identifiable cause. It frequently involves fear of pain, fear of needles or injections, fear of the drill or other instruments, fear of gagging or choking, fear of losing control or being unable to escape the chair, and embarrassment or shame about the condition of the teeth following years of avoidance.
Intense dread, panic or avoidance when thinking about or booking a dental appointment
Physical symptoms including racing heart, sweating, trembling or nausea before or during dental visits
Difficulty breathing or feelings of suffocation in the dental chair
Heightened sensitivity to sounds, smells or sights associated with dentistry
Gagging or retching response triggered by dental instruments or anticipation of procedures
Complete avoidance of dental care, sometimes for many years
Shame or embarrassment about the state of the teeth following prolonged avoidance
Inability to remain calm in the chair, feeling a desperate urge to escape
Panic attacks triggered by dental appointments or even by making a booking
Sleep disturbance or significant anxiety in the days before a dental appointment
Dental anxiety is driven by the subconscious mind.
The fear response that fires the moment someone thinks about the dentist, the panic that makes sitting in the chair feel impossible, the physical symptoms that seem entirely out of proportion to the situation - none of these are consciously chosen. They are deeply embedded automatic responses, often rooted in past experience, that activate the moment dental care is perceived as a threat. Conscious reassurance, telling yourself it will be fine, and willpower alone rarely change this. The pattern needs to change at the level where it lives.
Hypnotherapy works directly at the subconscious level, identifying and changing the beliefs, memories and automatic fear responses that create dental anxiety. By working here, hypnotherapy can remove the fear triggers that make dental visits feel unbearable, rebuild a sense of calm and control in dental situations and allow the person to access dental care they may have been unable to receive for years.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify and resolve the original experiences or beliefs that created the fear of dental treatment
Break the automatic anxiety and panic response triggered by dental situations
Reduce or eliminate the gag reflex response that is driven by anxiety
Build a genuine sense of calm, safety and control in the dental chair
Desensitise feared dental stimuli such as needles, instruments or sounds at a subconscious level
Challenge and reframe catastrophic thinking about pain, loss of control or being trapped
Develop a positive, manageable relationship with dental visits and dental care
Teach powerful self-hypnosis and calming techniques to use before and during appointments
Address shame or embarrassment about oral health following prolonged avoidance
Restore confidence in your ability to attend and cope with dental treatment

"I used a hypnotherapy session with Mark before my dentist appointment.
For years I been apprehensive about going for dental appointments. Although I couldn’t call it fear it was a very unpleasant feeling before my dental appointments that make me avoid them . There wasn’t just one thing that caused me to feel that way.
During the session we discussed the main anxiety drive and worked on that . My next dentist appointment was unbelievably different. I felt relaxed and made jokes . I booked my next appointment without any reservation. I am booking my next session with Mark to explore self hypnosis.

A: Dental anxiety is intense fear, dread or panic associated with dental visits or dental procedures. It ranges from significant anxiety that makes appointments very difficult, to full dental phobia in which the person avoids the dentist entirely, often for years. It is one of the most common forms of specific anxiety and responds very well to hypnotherapy.
A: Hypnotherapy and NLP are highly effective for dental anxiety. By working at the subconscious level where the fear response is maintained, it can remove the automatic panic triggered by dental situations and replace it with genuine calm and control. Many clients who could not previously attend the dentist go on to manage dental care with little or no anxiety.
A: Yes. The length of time you have avoided the dentist does not determine how well treatment will work. Many of our clients have avoided dental care for five to fifteen years or more. What matters is addressing the underlying anxiety, not the duration of avoidance. We treat everyone without judgement and focus entirely on helping you move forward.
A: Yes. An exaggerated gag reflex at the dentist is often driven by anxiety rather than a purely physical response, and hypnotherapy is highly effective at reducing or eliminating it. Many clients find that as their dental anxiety reduces, their gag reflex in dental situations significantly improves.
A: Yes. Fear of needles or injections is one of the most common specific triggers within dental anxiety and responds well to hypnotherapy. Your therapist can work to desensitise this specific fear alongside broader dental anxiety, helping you feel calm and in control even when injections are involved.
A: Most clients see meaningful improvement within 3 to 6 sessions. The number varies depending on the severity and history of the anxiety. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during your initial assessment and review progress throughout.
A: Yes. Fully online sessions via video call are just as effective as attending in person and are available to clients anywhere in the UK.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible appointment availability including evenings and weekends.
