Depression is more than feeling sad. It's the flatness, the exhaustion, the sense that nothing quite matters and nothing is going to change. It can make the simplest things feel impossible and the future feel out of reach. If you've been living with depression — whether it's been weeks, months or years — you already know that telling yourself to cheer up doesn't work. Neither does simply waiting for it to lift. At Newcastle Hypnotherapy we take depression seriously, and we take a genuinely different approach to it — one that looks at the whole person, including the powerful and often overlooked connection between your gut, your diet and your mental health. Our clients across Newcastle upon Tyne and the wider North East consistently tell us they wish they'd found us sooner.
Depression rarely has a single cause, and it rarely responds to a single solution. That's why we approach it from multiple directions simultaneously — addressing the psychological, emotional and physical drivers all at once.
Hypnotherapy for Depression:
Clinical hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious patterns driving low mood — the negative beliefs, the hopelessness, the automatic thoughts that keep depression in place. We help your mind begin to form new, healthier patterns and associations, restoring a sense of possibility, motivation and emotional range that depression can make feel permanently out of reach.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming):
Depression is often maintained by the way we process our experience — the mental pictures we make, the stories we tell ourselves, the way we direct our attention. NLP gives us fast, targeted tools to change those processing patterns, shifting perspective and creating movement in situations that have felt completely stuck.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique):
Depression frequently carries layers of unresolved emotion — grief, anger, shame, past trauma — that sit beneath the surface and feed the low mood. EFT is a gentle but remarkably powerful way to clear those layers, often producing a noticeable lift in mood and energy as the emotional weight begins to release.
Nutritional Therapy and Gut Health:
This is where our approach goes further than most. The connection between gut health, inflammation and depression is one of the most important and rapidly growing areas of mental health research — and it is something we take very seriously. Chronic inflammation in the gut directly affects brain chemistry, neurotransmitter production and mood regulation. Many people living with depression are eating foods that are actively fuelling that inflammation every single day without knowing it. Our in-house nutritional therapist uses advanced optimal health testing to identify precisely which foods are causing inflammation in your body, then builds a personalised nutrition plan to reduce that inflammatory load, support your gut microbiome and give your brain the nutritional environment it needs to function at its best. For many of our clients, this dietary piece is genuinely transformational — and it is something almost no other therapy practice in the North East offers.
All sessions are available in person at our Gosforth clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne, or online for clients across Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Northumberland and the wider UK.
We treat the whole person, including the gut:
The link between diet, gut inflammation and depression is scientifically established and clinically significant. We are one of the very few practices in the North East that addresses this directly — with in-house optimal health testing and personalised nutritional therapy as a core part of our depression programme, not an afterthought.
Multiple powerful approaches under one roof:
Depression is complex. Our team draws on clinical hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT and nutritional therapy to address every layer of what you're dealing with — something a single therapist working from a single modality simply cannot match.

Yes — and it works in a way that complements rather than competes with other treatments including medication. Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious patterns that maintain depression — the deep-seated beliefs about yourself and the world, the habitual ways of processing experience, the loss of motivation and hope — and begins to shift them directly. It doesn't replace medical care, and we always encourage clients to stay in close contact with their GP. But as part of a comprehensive programme it can produce meaningful and lasting improvements in mood, energy and outlook. Our clients across Newcastle and the North East consistently describe a gradual but genuine return to themselves.
This is one of the most important questions in mental health right now, and the research is compelling. The gut and brain are connected by the vagus nerve and communicate constantly — a relationship often referred to as the gut-brain axis. When the gut is inflamed, that inflammation travels to the brain and directly disrupts the production of neurotransmitters including serotonin, around 90% of which is produced in the gut rather than the brain. Many common foods trigger inflammatory responses that most people are completely unaware of — and those responses can directly worsen depression, anxiety, brain fog and low mood. Our in-house nutritional therapist uses optimal health testing to identify exactly which foods are causing inflammation in your body specifically, then creates a personalised nutrition plan to reduce that inflammation, support your gut microbiome and give your brain the environment it needs to produce the chemistry of wellbeing.
Yes, absolutely. Everything we do works alongside antidepressant medication and does not interfere with it in any way. We never advise clients to stop or change their medication — that is always a conversation to have with your GP. What we do is work on the psychological and nutritional dimensions of depression alongside whatever medical support you are receiving, giving you the best possible chance of genuine and lasting improvement.
Chronic inflammation is one of the most significant and underappreciated drivers of persistent pain. Certain foods trigger inflammatory responses in the body that can directly worsen pain levels — and many people are eating those foods every day without realising it. Our in-house nutritional therapist uses optimal health testing to identify precisely which foods are causing inflammation in your body specifically, then builds a targeted nutrition plan to reduce that inflammatory load. For many of our clients across Newcastle and the North East this alone produces a noticeable improvement in their pain levels — and combined with hypnotherapy the results can be remarkable.
CBT and counselling work primarily at the conscious level — exploring thoughts, challenging beliefs and building coping strategies through conversation. These approaches have genuine value, but they don't always reach the deeper subconscious patterns driving depression, and they rarely address the physical and nutritional dimension at all. Our approach goes deeper on the psychological side through hypnotherapy and NLP, and further on the physical side through gut health assessment and nutritional therapy. Many of our clients in Newcastle and across the North East come to us having already had CBT or counselling with limited results — and find that working at these deeper levels produces the shift that talking alone never quite achieved.
Depression varies enormously from person to person, and we will always be honest with you about what to expect for your specific situation. Most clients begin to notice meaningful shifts within the first three to five sessions — a gradual lightening, more energy, moments of genuine pleasure returning. A full programme typically runs between six and twelve sessions depending on how long the depression has been present and what is driving it. The nutritional piece often produces its own noticeable improvements within four to six weeks of dietary changes — and for many clients the combination of therapeutic and nutritional work accelerates progress significantly. We will give you a clear and realistic picture during your free assessment call.
