What Does Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Feel Like? A Session From the Inside

November 09, 2026•5 min read

Most people who book hypnotherapy for anxiety have one unspoken question: what is it actually going to feel like? Will I feel strange? Will I know it is working? Will I be aware of everything, or will I "go under"?

The honest picture is much calmer than people expect. Here is what a session feels like from the inside.

Before you begin: just a conversation

The start of a session is an ordinary conversation. We talk about what you are struggling with, what triggers your anxiety and what you want life to feel like instead. There is no couch drama and no swinging watch. Most people find that simply being listened to properly, without judgement, lowers their shoulders a little.

Settling in

You sit or recline in a comfortable chair, and I talk you through relaxing, usually starting with your breathing and letting your body get heavy. In a few minutes, people typically notice:

  • Heavy or warm arms and legs, or the opposite, a floaty, light sensation

  • Slower, deeper breathing

  • Eyelids that feel heavy and comfortable to keep closed

  • A quiet, softening feeling in the chest and stomach where anxiety often sits

The state itself

Hypnosis feels like deep, focused relaxation. Many people compare it to the moment just before falling asleep, or to being completely absorbed in a good film. You are not unconscious. You hear my voice, you are aware of sounds in the room, and your mind may wander and come back, which is completely normal and does not spoil anything.

Different people experience it differently. Some feel very deeply relaxed, some feel light and alert, and some are not sure they were hypnotised at all until they notice how calm they feel afterwards. All of these are normal. Time can also seem to shift, so a thirty-minute session may feel like ten.

What if my mind will not stop chattering?

Thoughts drifting through is normal. You do not need an empty mind. If you are an over thinker, read can anyone be hypnotised? Often the people who worry most about this respond very well.

Coming back

At the end, you are guided back to full alertness, which takes a few moments. You may feel calm, a little sleepy or pleasantly heavy, and some people feel emotional as tension releases. Most people feel clearer and lighter than when they arrived. It is a good idea to give yourself a few quiet minutes before driving or rushing anywhere.

What happens over the following days

Change is usually gradual and subtle. Clients often tell us they realise a few days later that something did not bother them the way it used to, or that they stayed calm in a situation that would normally have set them off. Sleep often improves first. Most clients notice meaningful change within 4 to 6 weeks, which is one reason our approach combines clinical hypnotherapy with NLP and nutritional coaching rather than relying on relaxation alone.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy for anxiety issues?

There are many therapies and treatments to help with the many different types of anxiety issues.
Many of those therapies take considerable time and involve several months or even years of therapy, often revisiting the past regularly.

Clinical Hypnotherapy, when combined with NLP and Nutritional Therapy, typically resolves anxiety in 4 to 6 weeks without the need for long, expensive therapy sessions.

Why are hypnotherapy and NLP faster in treating anxiety issues?

Neuroscience has known for many years that anxiety disorders are behavioural patterns that operate in the unconscious mind.
Both hypnosis and NLP target these unconscious patterns quickly without the need to go over the past.

Why is nutritional coaching important to resolving anxiety issues?

A lot of studies have shown that hidden digestive issues can cause or make anxiety worse.
Food intolerances and sensitivities are known to trigger inflammation issues in the brain and gut and often contribute to mental health issues

Digestive issues can also reduce the production of serotonin and melatonin, making anxiety issues and sleep problems worse.

Low levels of vitamins and minerals can be linked to mental health issues and are often undetected.

Research shows that a poor gut biome can affect the gut-brain axis, which is known to make anxiety, stress & depression issues much worse.

High candida levels have been associated with anxiety and mental health issues for many years.

Our approach to anxiety can save you time and money.

Our aim is to help you feel better fast by targeting anxiety from every angle.
Proven modern therapy methods need fewer sessions without you spending months or years in therapy.
