Will I Lose Control Under Hypnosis? What Really Happens (And What Doesn't)
If you live with anxiety, control matters. Anxiety often feels like your mind and body are running the show without your permission, so it makes complete sense that the idea of hypnosis, which many people picture as handing control to someone else, sounds unappealing.
Here is the reassuring truth: you do not lose control under hypnosis. In fact, clinical hypnotherapy is one of the few approaches that helps you get control back. Let us clear up the myths.
Where the fear comes from
Most people's picture of hypnosis comes from stage shows, films and television. A swinging watch, a volunteer clucking like a chicken, a villain forcing someone to act against their will. None of that reflects clinical hypnotherapy.
Stage volunteers are people who have chosen to go on stage, want to take part and are happy to play along. The performer is selecting the most willing and suggestible people in the room. That is entertainment, not therapy.
What it actually feels like
In a hypnotherapy session you are sitting or reclining comfortably, and you are awake throughout. Most clients describe a pleasant heavy relaxation with a calm, focused mind. You will hear my voice, you will be aware of the room, and you will remember the session afterwards.
You can move, scratch your nose, adjust your position, speak or open your eyes whenever you want. If something needs to stop, it stops. You are always in charge of the pace.
Can I be made to say or do something embarrassing?
No. Hypnosis is not a truth serum and it is not mind control. You cannot be made to reveal secrets, and you cannot be made to do anything that goes against your values, wishes or common sense. Your critical mind stays present in the background, quietly filtering what you accept. If a suggestion did not sit right with you, you simply would not act on it.
Could I get stuck in hypnosis?
This is another myth. Hypnosis is a natural state that you already move in and out of every day, for example when you get lost in a film or drive a familiar route on autopilot. If a session ended abruptly, you would either return to full awareness within moments or drift into normal sleep and wake up naturally. Nobody has ever been trapped in hypnosis.
Why hypnotherapy actually gives control back
Anxiety is largely an automatic response. Your brain detects a perceived threat and fires up your body before your thinking mind has a say. Hypnotherapy works with that automatic level, helping your mind and body learn a calmer response to the same triggers. Combined with NLP techniques, clients learn tools they can use themselves, so the sense of control does not depend on us at all.
Many clients tell us the moment it clicked was when they realised they were in charge the whole time. To see how a typical appointment runs from start to finish, read what happens during your first hypnotherapy session.
Tips if you are nervous about your first session
Tell your practitioner about your concerns at the start. A good hypnotherapist will welcome the conversation.
Ask any question you like about the process. Nothing should be a mystery.
Remember that you can open your eyes and stop whenever you want.
