Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition in which a person becomes intensely preoccupied with one or more perceived flaws in their physical appearance.
These flaws are either invisible to others or appear minor, yet to the person with BDD, they feel overwhelming, prominent and deeply shameful.
BDD is not vanity. It is not simply feeling insecure about your appearance.
It is a serious anxiety-related condition in which the brain becomes locked in a cycle of obsessive focus on appearance, compulsive checking or avoidance behaviours, and extreme distress. It can consume hours of a person's day and significantly restrict their ability to work, socialise and live a full life.
BDD most commonly involves concerns about the face, skin, hair, nose, eyes, weight or specific body parts, but it can focus on any aspect of appearance. The condition is closely related to OCD and shares many of the same underlying mechanisms: obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviours and temporary relief that quickly gives way to more anxiety.
BDD affects people of all ages and genders. It is significantly more common than many people realise, and because of the shame associated with the condition, it often goes undiagnosed and untreated for years. Left without appropriate treatment, BDD tends to worsen over time. With the right specialist support, meaningful recovery is absolutely achievable.
Preoccupation with one or more perceived physical flaws that others cannot see or see as minor
Spending significant time each day thinking about the perceived flaw
Compulsive mirror checking, or completely avoiding mirrors
Excessive grooming, skin picking, hair pulling or other body-focused repetitive behaviours
Seeking reassurance from others about appearance, or avoiding any discussion of it
Comparing your appearance repeatedly to others
Avoiding social situations, work or activities due to appearance concerns
Wearing concealing clothing, hats or makeup to hide the perceived flaw
Seeking cosmetic procedures, then finding the anxiety quickly returns to the same or a new area
Significant distress, shame, embarrassment and reduced quality of life
BDD is fundamentally an anxiety disorder.
The obsessive focus on appearance and the compulsive behaviours that follow are driven by deep anxiety, distorted perception and negative core beliefs about self-worth. These operate at a subconscious level, which is why conscious reassurance, logical argument and willpower alone rarely break the cycle. Hypnotherapy is uniquely positioned to work at this deeper level, directly addressing the beliefs and anxiety driving the condition.
Unlike approaches that focus only on managing symptoms or challenging thoughts at a conscious level, hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious mind where the distorted perception and emotional distress are rooted.
By working here, hypnotherapy can identify and resolve the core beliefs about self-worth and appearance that fuel BDD, break the obsessive anxiety cycle at its source and rebuild a genuinely different, more balanced and compassionate relationship with your body and self-image.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify the original experiences and beliefs that created the distorted perception of appearance
Reduce the obsessive anxiety response and intrusive thoughts about appearance
Break the cycle of compulsive checking, avoidance and reassurance-seeking
Challenge and reframe the core beliefs driving feelings of defectiveness or shame
Build a genuinely more balanced and accepting perception of your body and appearance
Reduce the emotional intensity and distress connected to appearance concerns
Develop self-worth that is independent of physical appearance
Teach self-hypnosis and calming techniques to use when anxiety spikes
Support gradual re-engagement with avoided situations and activities
Many clients notice a meaningful reduction in the intensity of BDD thoughts and compulsions within the first few sessions.
As treatment progresses, the obsessive focus loosens, the compulsive behaviours reduce and the emotional distress lifts. Life begins to expand again.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
Your therapist will take time to fully understand your experience of BDD, the areas of focus, the compulsive behaviours involved, the history of the condition and the impact it is having on your life. From this, a personalised treatment programme is built specifically around you.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 sessions, though this varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition. Your therapist monitors your progress and adjusts the programme throughout. You are in full control at all times.

A: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is an anxiety-related condition characterised by intense preoccupation with one or more perceived physical flaws that others cannot see or consider minor. The person with BDD experiences significant distress and engages in compulsive behaviours such as mirror checking, grooming, seeking reassurance or avoiding social situations. It is closely related to OCD and significantly affects quality of life.
A: No. BDD is a recognised mental health condition, not a personality trait. People with BDD experience genuine, uncontrollable distress about their appearance that goes far beyond normal insecurity. The preoccupation is intrusive, time-consuming and causes significant impairment. It is not a choice and requires specialist treatment, not simply reassurance.
A: Yes. Hypnotherapy is effective for BDD because it works at the subconscious level where the distorted perception, core beliefs and anxiety driving the condition are rooted. It addresses the underlying causes rather than simply managing surface symptoms. Many clients experience significant and lasting reduction in BDD thoughts, compulsions and distress.
A: BDD and OCD share the same underlying mechanism: obsessive intrusive thoughts followed by compulsive behaviours that provide temporary relief but ultimately reinforce the anxiety. In BDD the obsession centres on appearance. Hypnotherapy is effective for both conditions because it works at the subconscious level where the obsessive cycle is created and maintained.
A: Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 sessions. The number varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during your initial assessment and review progress throughout treatment.
A: No, and it does not need to. BDD involves a distorted perception of appearance, not an actual physical flaw. Hypnotherapy works to resolve the distorted perception and the anxiety driving it, so that you can see yourself more accurately and calmly. This is why cosmetic procedures rarely resolve BDD - the problem is not in the appearance itself.
A: Yes. We offer fully online hypnotherapy via video call, which is just as effective as attending in person. This is ideal for clients whose BDD makes leaving the house or being seen in public particularly difficult.
Please contact us to discuss your situation.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible appointment availability including evenings and weekends.
