Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is capable of speech becomes unable to speak in certain social situations, despite speaking normally in others.
It is most commonly identified in children, typically when they start school, but it also affects teenagers and adults, often going unrecognised for many years.
The condition is not stubbornness, shyness or a deliberate choice. People with Selective Mutism desperately want to speak but the anxiety is so overwhelming in certain situations that speech becomes physically impossible. The child or adult is not refusing to talk. They are frozen by anxiety.
Selective Mutism most commonly occurs in social or performance settings such as school, work, public places or around people outside the immediate family. At home, or with trusted individuals, the person may be talkative and entirely at ease. This contrast is one of the defining features of the condition and is frequently misunderstood by those around them.
Without appropriate treatment, Selective Mutism can persist into adulthood, significantly limiting education, career, relationships and quality of life. Early, effective intervention makes a significant difference to outcomes.
Consistent inability to speak in specific social situations despite speaking freely elsewhere
Appearing frozen, blank-faced or extremely tense in situations where speaking is expected
Communicating through gestures, nods, writing or whispering when unable to speak
Intense anxiety before entering situations where speaking is expected
Appearing to relax noticeably when the pressure to speak is removed
Avoiding situations where speaking is required
Difficulty maintaining eye contact in anxiety-triggering situations
Physical symptoms of anxiety including a racing heart, nausea and sweating
In children: reluctance to attend school, social withdrawal, clinginess
In adults: avoidance of meetings, phone calls, social events and professional settings
Selective Mutism can affect anyone regardless of age, background or previous mental health history.
It is more common than many people realise and, with the right specialist treatment, full recovery is absolutely achievable.
Selective Mutism is at its core an anxiety disorder.
The inability to speak is not the primary problem. It is the symptom of an underlying anxiety response that has become automatic and self-reinforcing. This is why approaches that simply encourage or pressure the person to speak rarely work and can make things worse. The anxiety itself must be addressed.
Hypnotherapy and NLP are uniquely effective for Selective Mutism because it works directly at the subconscious level where the anxiety response is created and maintained. Rather than pushing the person to speak before they feel safe, hypnotherapy removes the underlying fear that is preventing speech in the first place. As the anxiety reduces, speech returns naturally and without force.
During your sessions, your therapist creates an exceptionally safe, relaxed and pressure-free environment. There is no expectation to speak or perform. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify and resolve the original anxiety triggers that created the pattern of silence
Reduce the automatic freeze response in speaking situations
Build a deep sense of safety and confidence in social environments
Gently desensitise feared situations at a subconscious level
Develop positive associations with speaking in previously feared contexts
Build self-worth and reduce the fear of judgement or negative evaluation
Teach calming techniques for use in everyday anxiety-triggering situations
Support gradual, comfortable re-engagement with speaking in social settings
Strengthen the individual's sense of identity and voice
Most clients notice a meaningful shift in their anxiety and mutsim within the first few sessions.
Over the course of treatment, the world begins to open up again.
Clients who once could not leave their front door find themselves travelling independently, socialising and living the life anxiety has taken from them.
For children, sessions are adapted to be age-appropriate, gentle and entirely non-pressuring. Parents are often involved in supporting progress between sessions. For adults, the approach is tailored to the specific situations and relationships where mutism occurs.
Progress with Selective Mutism is often gradual and incremental, but with the right support it is absolutely achievable. Many clients who have been silent in certain situations for years begin to find their voice again within a course of treatment.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
For children, this will involve the parents and is designed to be relaxed and non-pressuring for the child.
Your therapist will take time to understand the full picture, the history of the condition, the specific situations affected and what you want to achieve through treatment.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Progress varies depending on the age of the individual, the severity of the condition and how long it has been present. Your therapist will set clear, achievable goals and review progress at every stage.

"Fantastic service! I took my daughter to see Mark for severe anxiety which was affecting her everyday life.
Mark was fantastic and after 3 sessions she was like a different girl! He gave her the tools to use so she can control her anxiety in future which she still uses everyday. He was very patient, understanding and very easy for her to talk to. I really can’t recommend him enough!"

A: Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is capable of speech becomes unable to speak in specific social situations, despite speaking normally in others. It is not a choice or an act of defiance. It is an involuntary freeze response driven by anxiety. It most commonly appears in childhood but can persist into or develop in adulthood.
A: No. While shyness involves some discomfort in social situations, Selective Mutism is a clinical anxiety disorder that causes a physical inability to speak in certain settings. The person desperately wants to speak but the anxiety response is so powerful that speech becomes impossible. It requires specialist treatment, not simply encouragement or reassurance.
A: Yes. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for Selective Mutism because it targets the underlying anxiety that prevents speech. Rather than pressuring the person to speak, it removes the fear at the source. As anxiety reduces, speech returns naturally and without force. Many clients, including those who have been mute in certain situations for years, experience significant improvement through hypnotherapy.
A: Yes. We work with children experiencing Selective Mutism as well as teenagers and adults. Sessions for children are adapted to be age-appropriate, gentle and entirely non-pressuring. We involve parents in the process and work collaboratively to support progress both in sessions and in everyday life.
A: Progress with Selective Mutism is often gradual. The number of sessions depends on the individual, their age, the severity of the condition and how long it has been present. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during the initial assessment and review progress throughout treatment.
A: Yes. Online hypnotherapy via video call is available and can be highly appropriate for clients with Selective Mutism, as it allows treatment to begin in the familiar and comfortable environment of home. Online sessions are just as effective as attending in person. Please contact us to discuss your situation.
A: The duration of Selective Mutism does not determine whether treatment will work. Even long-standing cases respond well to the right approach. What matters most is the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the effectiveness of the treatment. Many of our most significant results have come with clients who have been affected for many years.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible appointment availability including evenings and weekends.
