Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) is a short-term trauma response that develops in the days or weeks immediately following exposure to a traumatic or deeply distressing event.
It is the mind and body's immediate reaction to an experience that has overwhelmed the normal capacity to cope.
Acute Stress Disorder can follow any event that involves actual or threatened death, serious injury, sexual violence or other forms of severe threat. This includes road traffic accidents, physical assault, witnessing violence, sudden bereavement, medical emergencies, natural disasters, workplace accidents and other shocking or life-threatening events.
ASD is different from normal stress or upset following a difficult event. It involves a cluster of specific symptoms that significantly impair daily functioning and that persist beyond the immediate moment of the event.
By definition, ASD occurs within one month of the traumatic event. If symptoms persist beyond one month, the condition may develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Early, effective intervention is crucial. Research consistently shows that addressing trauma symptoms promptly and with the right therapeutic approach significantly reduces the risk of ASD progressing into long-term PTSD. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective early interventions available.
Intrusive, unwanted memories or flashbacks of the traumatic event
Distressing dreams or nightmares related to the event
Dissociation, feeling detached from yourself or as if the world is unreal
Emotional numbing or inability to feel positive emotions
Inability to experience positive emotions such as happiness or love
Avoidance of thoughts, feelings, places, people or activities that trigger memories of the event
Heightened alertness and hypervigilance, feeling constantly on guard
Exaggerated startle response to sounds or sudden movements
Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
Irritability, anger or emotional outbursts
Significant distress and impairment in daily functioning, work and relationships
When a traumatic event occurs, the memory of that event can become stored in the nervous system in a raw, unprocessed form. Unlike normal memories that are integrated and contextualised over time, traumatic memories can remain vivid, immediate and emotionally charged, triggering the same fear response as if the event were happening now.
This is the core mechanism of both Acute Stress Disorder and PTSD.
Hypnotherapy and NLP are highly effective for ASD because it works directly with the way traumatic memories are stored and processed. By accessing the subconscious mind in a deeply relaxed state, hypnotherapy can help the nervous system safely process and integrate the traumatic experience, reducing the emotional charge attached to the memory and allowing the brain to begin filing it as a past event rather than an ongoing threat.
Crucially, hypnotherapy for ASD does not require you to repeatedly relive the traumatic event in distressing detail. Your therapist works carefully and gently, always at a pace that feels safe for you. In a deeply relaxed, receptive state, proven techniques are used to:
Safely process and integrate the traumatic memory at a subconscious level
Reduce the emotional intensity and physical distress attached to the trauma memory
Break the automatic fear and hyper arousal response triggered by trauma reminders
Reduce intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and nightmares
Restore a sense of safety, calm and groundedness in the body and mind
Address dissociation and reconnect you with a stable sense of self
Reduce avoidance behaviours and restore confidence in daily life
Teach self-hypnosis and powerful calming techniques for use independently
Significantly reduce the risk of ASD progressing into long-term PTSD
The earlier treatment begins after a traumatic event, the better the outcomes.
Hypnotherapy and NLP are particularly effective as an early intervention because the nervous system is still in the process of integrating the experience and is highly responsive to therapeutic support at this stage.
Your treatment begins with a thorough, sensitive assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us. Your therapist will take time to understand what happened, how you are currently experiencing symptoms and what you want to achieve through treatment. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with. Your safety and wellbeing come first at every stage.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Many clients with ASD experience significant relief within 3 to 6 sessions, particularly when treatment begins promptly after the traumatic event. Your therapist monitors your progress carefully throughout and adjusts the approach as you develop. You are in full control at all times.
