Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterised by an intense fear of situations or environments where escape might be difficult, help would be unavailable, or a panic attack might occur.
Despite its common association with open spaces, agoraphobia is much more complex than simply a fear of the outdoors. It can include fear of crowded places, public transport, shopping centres, queues, bridges, being outside alone or being far from home.
For many people with agoraphobia, the world gradually shrinks. What begins as avoidance of one or two situations can, without treatment, spread until leaving the house feels impossible. In severe cases, people become completely housebound, dependent on others for basic tasks and increasingly isolated from the life they want to live.
Agoraphobia is often, though not always, associated with panic disorder.
The fear of having a panic attack in a public place, and the accompanying shame and helplessness, drives the avoidance that defines the condition. Over time, the avoided situations multiply and the safe zone contracts.
Intense fear or panic in open spaces, crowded places or public environments
Fear of using public transport, lifts, bridges or travelling away from home
Avoidance of situations where escape might be difficult or embarrassing
Feeling safe only at home or in a very limited number of familiar places
Reliance on a trusted companion to leave the house or go anywhere unfamiliar
Physical symptoms including racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating and nausea.
Anticipatory anxiety - intense dread before entering a feared situation
Panic attacks triggered by being in or anticipating feared environments
Gradual restriction of daily life, work, relationships and independence
Shame, embarrassment and low self-worth connected to the condition
Agoraphobia can affect anyone regardless of age, background or previous mental health history.
It is more common than many people realise and, with the right specialist treatment, full recovery is absolutely achievable.
Agoraphobia is a subconscious condition.
The fear response is automatic, immediate and not under conscious control. This is why willpower, logic and gradual exposure alone often fail to produce lasting results.
Hypnotherapy and NLP work at the subconscious level, directly accessing and reprogramming the automatic fear responses and avoidance patterns that maintain the condition.
By working with the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can identify the original triggers and experiences that created the agoraphobic response, resolve the underlying anxiety and panic, and rebuild a calm, confident automatic response to situations that were previously feared. Rather than simply teaching you to tolerate anxiety, hypnotherapy helps eliminate it at source.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify and resolve the original triggers of the agoraphobic response
Break the automatic panic and fear response to open or public spaces
Reduce and eliminate the anticipatory anxiety before entering feared situations
Challenge and reframe the core beliefs driving avoidance behaviour
Build genuine confidence and a sense of safety in previously feared environments
Rehearse calm, confident movement through the world at a subconscious level
Reduce dependence on safety behaviours and trusted companions
Teach self-hypnosis and powerful calming techniques for use independently
Gradually and comfortably expand your world and your sense of freedom
Most clients notice a meaningful shift in their anxiety and avoidance within the first few sessions.
Over the course of treatment, the world begins to open up again.
Clients who once could not leave their front door find themselves travelling independently, socialising and living the life agoraphobia had taken from them.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
Your therapist will take time to fully understand your agoraphobia, how it developed, what situations you avoid, how it affects your daily life and what you want to achieve through treatment.
From this, a personalised programme is built around your specific needs and goals.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 sessions, though this varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition.
Your therapist monitors your progress and adjusts the programme as you develop. You are in full control at all times.

"I was struggling incredibly badly, without too much detail, my daily life consisted of being scared to leave the house, issues with food, panic attacks, severe anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. I felt like I could not get better at all and called Mark. I was very sceptical about Hypnotherapy at first but Mark reassured me that him and his team could help me with my issues. Mark was extremely polite and helpful in the consultation, and recommended Bob to work with me.
I do not know what I would of done without Bob! He has helped me so much with my issues and I have overcome so many of my fears. He was informative, polite, kind, and understanding. He was also very patient and is an extremely fantastic listener. I kept an open mind about the techniques we used to help with my daily life, and over time I was able to sleep better, eat well, and function properly overall. I now leave the house without overthinking and I can get on with my daily life. I am forever grateful for this service and highly recommend Bob and Mark to help. I cannot express my thanks enough for how helpful Bob was in the sessions. He is a very gentle and understanding individual who is happy to help. I wish I had done this sooner!
After all of the sessions were completed, Bob was happy to check in on me since I started living a more positive life and this was helpful. I still practice the techniques and I am healthier overall. Thank you to both for helping me overcome my fears and live a happier life.."

A: Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder involving intense fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable, such as open spaces, crowded places, public transport or being far from home. It is often associated with panic disorder and can lead to significant restriction of daily life, including in severe cases becoming completely housebound.
A: No. This is a common misconception. Agoraphobia involves fear of a range of situations where escape might be difficult or a panic attack might occur. This can include crowded places, queues, public transport, shopping centres, bridges and anywhere outside a person's safe zone, which is often the home.
A: Hypnotherapy and NLP are highly effective for agoraphobia. Many clients achieve full resolution of their symptoms and go on to live completely unrestricted lives. Results vary depending on the individual and the severity of the condition, but significant and lasting improvement is achievable for the vast majority of clients.
A: Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 sessions. The number varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during your initial assessment and review your progress throughout.
A: Yes. We offer fully online hypnotherapy via video call, which is just as effective as attending in person. This is ideal for clients whose agoraphobia makes leaving home difficult or impossible. Home visits may also be available for clients who need additional support. Please contact us to discuss your situation.
A: Not always, but the two conditions frequently co-occur. Many people with agoraphobia develop it following a panic attack in a public place and begin avoiding situations where they fear another attack might happen. Hypnotherapy effectively addresses both the agoraphobia and any underlying panic disorder simultaneously.
A: Yes! Both are very effective and safe as they work on your agoraphobia problem at the unconscious level, where it exists.
This avoids years of explaining the problem over and over to a counsellor or talk therapist.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible appointment availability including evenings and weekends.
Agoraphobia does not have to define the boundaries of your world.
Our award-winning specialist team is here to help you reclaim your freedom, rebuild your confidence and live the unrestricted life you deserve. Online sessions and home visits available. Your assessment is usually available within 24 hours.
"Had my final therapy session with Bob Tait. What a therapist, his knowledge and advice was invaluable.
I was down and thought I had nowhere to turn,
how wrong I was I am now on cloud nine and happier than I have been for a while.
Please don’t suffer in silence,
go see this man you won’t regret it. Many Thanks Bob
