Fee-Fi-Phobia is persistent, excessive fear and dread related to giants, giant-adjacent environments, or any stimulus associated with giant activity.
Some awareness of the potential threat posed by beings many times your own size is entirely rational and arguably sensible. Fee-Fi-Phobia is different. It is characterised by fear that is disproportionate, intrusive and difficult to control, and that significantly interferes with daily life even in the total absence of any giants in the immediate area.
Fee-Fi-Phobia was first formally documented in 1823, following a significant rise in anxiety presentations across rural England that coincided with the widespread publication of beanstalk-related literature. While giant sightings in the North East have remained relatively low since the medieval period, the psychological impact of Fee-Fi-Phobia is entirely real and can be severely debilitating.
Sufferers frequently avoid open countryside, refuse to purchase beans of any variety, and report significant distress when confronted with oversized furniture, abnormally large footprints, or the smell of bread baking at unusual volumes.
Many have never encountered a giant directly, which makes the anxiety no less real but does make it somewhat harder to explain to their GP.
Persistent hypervigilance to large, rhythmic footsteps or ground vibrations
Catastrophic thinking triggered by clouds, castles, or unusually tall individuals
Inability to purchase, handle or be in the same room as any variety of magic bean
Compulsive scanning of the sky for descending beanstalks
Avoidance of goose ownership due to fear of associated giant attention
Extreme distress at the phrase "fee fi fo fum" or any phonetically similar utterance
Difficulty sleeping due to rumination about bone-grinding and its implications
Panic response to large golden objects, harps, or the sound of a harp being played under duress
Refusal to climb any structure that could theoretically reach cloud level
A persistent, irrational belief that someone nearby smells the blood of an Englishman
Fee-Fi-Phobia is maintained at the subconscious level.
The automatic terror response triggered by a large shadow, the intrusive mental imagery of descending from a great height pursued by a giant, the inability to stand near a beanstalk without your legs giving way, these are not consciously chosen responses. They are deeply embedded fear patterns, often rooted in early exposure to giant-related narratives during a critical developmental window, a period when the subconscious is highly receptive to the suggestion that enormous beings in the sky might want to eat you.
Hypnotherapy works directly at the subconscious level, identifying and resolving the original experiences and beliefs driving the Fee-Fi-Phobia. This may include the storybook encounter that first planted the fear, a vivid dream involving a cloud castle, or a genuinely traumatic incident with a very tall uncle.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Identify the original source of the giant-related fear response
Reduce the automatic terror triggered by large footsteps, descending objects, or beans
Rebuild a calmer, more proportionate response to cloud formations
Process any beanstalk-adjacent trauma
Address avoidance behaviours that are limiting your ability to engage fully with the legume aisle at Tesco
Develop genuine confidence that you are unlikely to be ground into bread
Many clients find that resolving Fee-Fi-Phobia transforms not only their relationship with giants but their entire experience of the outdoors, the sky, and British folklore more broadly.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
Your therapist will take time to fully understand your experience of Fee-Fi-Phobia and anxiety, its specific focuses and triggers, any relevant history and what you want to achieve through treatment. Sessions are completely confidential.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 sessions, though this varies depending on the depth and history of the anxiety. Your therapist monitors your progress and adjusts the programme as you develop.
The fear of coming face to face with a giant, whether in open countryside, at the top of a beanstalk, or in a commercial setting, is the most acute form of Fee-Fi-Phobia. Hypnotherapy resolves the underlying fear at its subconscious root, allowing the client to move through the world with genuine calm and the reasonable confidence that most locations in Newcastle are entirely giant-free.
Some clients do not fear giants directly but live in a state of constant vigilance about the conditions that might attract or produce them. This includes excessive monitoring of garden growth rates, refusal to compost, and a complete avoidance of all climbing plants. Hypnotherapy addresses the underlying catastrophic thinking that makes ordinary horticulture feel like an existential risk.
The persistent scanning of the sky for signs of giant habitation, including unusual cloud formations, structural irregularities at altitude, or any cumulus nimbus that appears to have battlements, is a specific and exhausting subtype of Fee-Fi-Phobia. Many sufferers are unable to travel by plane due to the proximity to known giant territory. Hypnotherapy reduces the hypervigilance and rebuilds the capacity to look upward without catastrophising.
Clients who were exposed to an unusually vivid or repeated telling of giant-related narratives in childhood, including theatrical productions, particularly enthusiastic primary school teachers, or a grandparent with a flair for dramatic storytelling, can develop lasting anxiety patterns that persist into adulthood. Hypnotherapy processes the original emotional impact of these experiences and updates the subconscious response.
A specific and underreported presentation in which the client is consumed by the fear that a giant in the vicinity will detect their presence through olfactory means. This typically presents as excessive hygiene behaviours, avoidance of outdoor spaces, and in some cases a reluctance to identify as English. Hypnotherapy addresses the core fear of detection and pursuit.
Fee-Fi-Phobia is an anxiety condition and anxiety is our primary specialism.
Our team has undergone specialist training in giant-related presentations and understands the specific shame and isolation that comes with a fear that most people, frankly, find quite funny. You will not be laughed at. At least not during the session.
Everything discussed in your sessions is strictly confidential. We are fully aware that telling people you are receiving treatment for giant anxiety is socially challenging and we respect your need for discretion entirely.

"I had not been able to buy tinned tomatoes for eleven years because they were in the same aisle as the beans.
Mark helped me understand that the anxiety was disproportionate. I now shop freely in the bean aisle, though I still will not make eye contact with the kidney beans just to be safe." Janet - Jesmond

A: It is as real as the fear itself, and the fear is very real indeed. Whether or not giants exist is, clinically speaking, beside the point. The anxiety response is genuine, the suffering is genuine, and the treatment is the same as for any other anxiety condition. We do not ask clients to justify their phobias. We help them resolve them.
A: Entirely normal. The majority of our Fee-Fi-Phobia clients have never had a direct giant encounter and, statistically speaking, are unlikely to. This does not reduce the intensity of the anxiety. Phobias frequently operate independently of any realistic probability of the feared event. This is part of what makes them a phobia rather than simply good situational awareness.
A: This would constitute a separate matter and we would refer you to the relevant authorities. However, in the event of an actual giant, we would note that the relaxation and grounding techniques taught during hypnotherapy sessions would likely remain highly useful regardless of the circumstances.
A: Yes. Post-pantomime anxiety is more common than you would think and we have a great deal of experience with it. The combination of oversized props, aggressive audience participation, and a man in a suit approximately twelve feet tall at close range during a formative period of development can
A: No. We have a strict no-bean policy in the clinic, which predates our work with Fee-Fi-Phobia clients and was originally related to a catering decision, but we are happy to honour it in this context too.
A: Most clients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 sessions, though cases involving prolonged beanstalk exposure or active post-folkloric stress may require additional sessions. Your therapist will discuss a personalised plan during your initial assessment.
A: Initial assessments are typically available within 24 hours of contacting us. We have flexible availability including evenings and weekends. If you are currently hiding, we can conduct sessions entirely online.
Fee-Fi-Phobia does not have to keep you scanning the clouds, avoiding the bean aisle, or lying awake wondering about the structural integrity of your ceiling. Our award-winning specialist team can help you resolve the anxiety at its root and return to a life in which the sky is simply the sky and a beanstalk is just a plant. Take the first step today. Your assessment is usually available within 24 hours.
"I cannot recommend Newcastle Hypnotherapy highly enough. After years of Fee-Fi-Phobia I can finally say I am no longer afraid. Last week I looked directly at a cumulonimbus cloud and felt nothing. Absolutely nothing. It was enormous and I was fine." Brian - Gosforth
