Working With Children & Adults
Parental alienation occurs when a child is manipulated, whether deliberately or through the unconscious behaviour of one parent, into rejecting, fearing or expressing hostility towards the other parent without legitimate reason.
It is a form of psychological harm inflicted on a child and on the targeted parent, and it is widely recognised by family courts, child psychologists and mental health professionals as a serious and damaging pattern of behaviour.
Parental alienation most commonly occurs in the context of separation or divorce, when the child becomes caught in the emotional conflict between parents. The alienating parent may undermine the targeted parent's relationship with the child through persistent criticism, false allegations, emotional manipulation, restricting contact, or portraying the targeted parent as dangerous, uncaring or unworthy of the child's love. Over time, the child absorbs these messages and begins to mirror the alienating parent's feelings, expressing rejection and hostility that did not originate from their own genuine experience.
The impact on the targeted parent is devastating. To be rejected by your own child, to be unable to see or speak to them, to have the relationship you built deliberately destroyed, and to face a legal and social system that often fails to recognise what is happening, causes a level of grief, trauma, anxiety and psychological suffering that is profound and frequently underestimated. Many targeted parents describe it as a living bereavement.
Children who experience parental alienation also suffer significant psychological harm. The damage to their sense of reality, their capacity for trust, their ability to maintain healthy relationships and their own mental health can persist well into adulthood. Adults who were alienated as children often seek therapy years later to understand and process what they experienced.
Parental alienation is frequently misunderstood, dismissed or mishandled by therapists and counsellors who lack specialist training in the subject.
Without this training, a therapist may inadvertently validate false narratives, fail to recognise the alienation dynamic, or provide support that is not appropriate to the reality of the client's situation. This can cause significant additional harm to an already traumatised individual. At Newcastle Hypnotherapy, our team has specific training and experience in parental alienation, ensuring that every client receives informed, effective and appropriate support from the very first session.
Anxiety and constant worry

Feelings of grief and loss

Low self-esteem and loss of confidence
Emotional numbness
Obsessive thinking about the situation
Difficulty concentrating
Rumination ("going over and over" events)
Confusion and self-doubt
Intrusive thoughts
Negative beliefs about oneself
The psychological impact of parental alienation on the targeted parent is deep and complex.
The grief of losing a relationship with your child, the helpless anger of watching manipulation you cannot stop, the trauma of false allegations, the erosion of identity as a parent, the anxiety of legal proceedings, and the sustained psychological abuse that alienation often involves all leave significant marks at the subconscious level.
These are not wounds that resolve with time alone or with standard talking therapy. They require specialist, targeted treatment.
Hypnotherapy works directly at the subconscious level, where the emotional impact of parental alienation is held. By working here, hypnotherapy can process the grief, trauma and rage that parental alienation generates, reduce the anxiety and depression that sustain it, rebuild the sense of identity and self-worth that the process erodes, and support the targeted parent in maintaining their own psychological health and functioning through an often prolonged and extremely difficult experience.
During your sessions, your therapist will guide you into a deeply relaxed state. In this receptive state, a range of proven techniques are used to:
Process and reduce the grief of losing regular contact with your child
Release the trauma and emotional impact of false allegations, legal proceedings and sustained psychological abuse
Break cycles of intrusive thoughts, rumination and hypervigilance that sustain the anxiety
Rebuild a grounded sense of identity and self-worth that the alienation process has damaged
Manage and reduce the rage, helplessness and despair that targeted parents commonly experience
Develop emotional resilience and psychological stability during ongoing legal or family proceedings
Address the impact of alienation on other relationships, including intimate partnerships and friendships
Prepare emotionally and psychologically for potential reconciliation with an alienated child
Support adults who were themselves alienated as children in processing and understanding their experience
Teach self-hypnosis and grounding techniques to manage acute distress
Hypnotherapy cannot resolve the legal or practical dimensions of parental alienation.
What it can do is ensure that the targeted parent does not lose themselves in the process, and that they maintain the psychological health, clarity and resilience needed to be there for their child when reconciliation becomes possible.
Your treatment begins with a thorough assessment, available within 24 hours of contacting us.
Your therapist understands the parental alienation dynamic and will not require you to justify or prove your experience. Sessions are completely confidential. Many clients find it a profound relief to finally be in a room with a therapist who genuinely understands what parental alienation is and what it does.
Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions required varies depending on the duration and severity of the alienation, the current stage of the process, and what the client is seeking to address. Your therapist monitors your progress and adjusts the programme throughout.
We provide specialist therapeutic support for parents who are experiencing, or have experienced, parental alienation. Whether you are currently in the midst of alienation, have recently lost contact with your child, are navigating the family court system, or are working to rebuild a relationship with an adult child who was alienated, our team offers informed, compassionate and effective support.
Many adults seeking to understand confusing or painful childhood experiences discover that parental alienation was at the root. The distorted view of one parent that was instilled in them, the estrangement they experienced, the manipulation they underwent and the impact on their own mental health and relationships as adults can all be addressed in therapy. Our team works sensitively and effectively with adults processing the legacy of childhood alienation.
Where targeted parents have ongoing or restored contact with their children, therapeutic support for the child is often also beneficial. Our separate children's anxiety and therapy service provides specialist support for children and young people whose relationships, sense of reality and emotional wellbeing have been affected by the alienation process.
Newcastle Hypnotherapy is proud to work alongside PAPA - People Against Parental Alienation - a UK organisation that supports targeted parents, raises awareness of parental alienation, and campaigns for better recognition of its impact within the family justice system.

"I had seen three different therapists before Newcastle Hypnotherapy and none of them understood what parental alienation was. The moment I spoke to Mark I knew this was different. For the first time I was in a room with someone who genuinely understood. The support has been extraordinary."
