Can Newcastle Hypnotherapy Help Social Anxiety? A 10 Year Track Record Says Yes
Can Newcastle Hypnotherapy Help Social Anxiety?
If you dread walking into a room full of people, avoid speaking up in meetings, or find yourself making excuses to skip the next social event, you have probably already asked yourself this question. The short answer is yes. We have been helping people overcome social anxiety for over 10 years, and thousands of our clients have gone on to live fuller, more confident lives as a result.
Whether you are just starting to look into help for social anxiety, or you have already tried counselling or CBT and found progress slow, this article will walk you through how we approach social anxiety at Newcastle Hypnotherapy, why it works, and what you can realistically expect.
Why Hypnotherapy and NLP Succeed Where Talking Therapies Often Stall
Social anxiety rarely lives in the logical part of the mind. You already know, rationally, that most people are not judging you as harshly as you imagine. That knowledge does not stop your heart racing before a presentation, or your mind going blank when your manager asks you a question without warning.
This is because social anxiety is held at an unconscious level, in the automatic patterns of thought and behaviour we build up over years. Talking therapies and CBT work mainly with the conscious mind. They are valuable, but they can take many months to make a real difference, and some people find they understand their anxiety perfectly well without actually feeling any different.
Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) go directly to the unconscious patterns that are driving the anxiety. In our experience, this is why we usually help clients resolve social anxiety in 4 to 6 weeks, rather than the many months that talking therapy alone can take. Just as importantly, we teach clients the tools to manage their own state, so they keep the benefit long after our sessions end, often carrying it into their careers and relationships too.
Our Experience, Awards and Client Results
We have been rated the Number 1 hypnotherapy clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne, and we are proud to have earned over 100 five star Google reviews from clients we have helped with anxiety, confidence and stress. Our therapy team specialises in anxiety in all its forms, including the specific challenges of social anxiety at work, in social situations, and in relationships.
Social anxiety is a learned behaviour. It usually starts with a belief that we are not quite good enough, and then we unconsciously act in ways that confirm that belief. The problem is that the more we practice a behaviour, even an anxious one, the more we train ourselves to keep doing it. The good news is that this works in reverse too. When you learn the right techniques and practice a little each day, you can retrain yourself just as effectively toward confidence and calm.
Case Study: How Ryan Overcame Social Anxiety
Ryan came to us struggling with social anxiety at work, in social situations, and especially around women. His anxiety started on the journey to work, where being around so many people left him uncomfortable before the day had even begun. Once at his desk, he dreaded his manager asking him questions without warning, hated giving presentations, and avoided company social events altogether.
We began by working out exactly how Ryan wanted to feel and behave instead. He wanted to feel comfortable on his commute, and even imagined striking up conversation with familiar faces along the way. At work, he wanted to think on his feet and answer questions clearly and with confidence. During presentations, he wanted to stand tall, breathe slowly, and deliver with a strong, confident voice. Above all, he wanted to feel relaxed enough in social situations to make friends, and hopefully find a girlfriend.
Once we had a clear picture of the person Ryan wanted to become, we used a powerful NLP technique called the Column of Excellence, loading it with all the skills and qualities he needed for his daily life. Ryan took to the technique quickly, and his homework was to bring small moments of confidence into everyday life, from how he walked, to trips to the supermarket, to conversations on his commute.
We also worked on presentation skills, modelling posture and delivery from confident speakers he admired, practising eye contact, breathing techniques, and how to ask clarifying questions to keep an audience engaged. Alongside this, we worked on one to one communication for social events, including simple questions to ask when meeting someone new and how to keep a conversation flowing naturally.
Self hypnosis became one of Ryan's most powerful tools. Each evening he pictured himself as the confident, relaxed version of himself, in control and at ease both socially and at work. By his final session, Ryan walked in with a grin on his face, calm and full of confidence. He told us, excitedly, that he had been on a date with a woman from work and was already looking forward to the second one.
A Personal Note From Mark
I know how transformative these tools can be because I have used them myself. I once faced a disability tag from the NHS because of my anxiety and a stammer. Using the same techniques we now teach our clients, I overcame both, and went on to work as a DJ and public speaker. If these tools could take me from that starting point to standing in front of a crowd with a microphone, I know they can help you feel comfortable in a meeting room, at a social event, or on a first date.
What This Means If You Are Just Starting Out, Or Have Already Tried CBT
If you are only just beginning to look for help with social anxiety, know this: it is a learned behaviour, which means it can be unlearned. You do not need years of therapy to feel different. With the right techniques and a small amount of daily practice, real change is possible in weeks rather than months.
If you have already tried CBT or counselling and feel like you have made partial progress but are still stuck, hypnotherapy and NLP may be exactly what is missing. Working at the unconscious level often unlocks the change that conscious, talking based approaches cannot quite reach on their own.
Thousands of our clients have overcome social anxiety over the last decade, and there is no reason you cannot be next.
