Overcoming Anxiety, Panic Attacks & Trauma: Rob's Story
Anxiety has a way of creeping in after life throws too much at us at once. That's exactly what happened to Rob, one of our clients here at Newcastle Hypnotherapy, who came to us after a series of traumatic events left him with panic attacks, sleepless nights, and overwhelming waves of sadness.
We recently sat down with Rob to talk about his experience, and he kindly agreed to share his story on video. Here's what he told us.
"It Was Just Starting to Get a Bit Much"
Rob explained that a string of traumas, one following another, had built up over time. Soon he was waking in the night unable to breathe, sometimes three, four, even five times a week. He'd tried a more traditional talking therapy first, but it didn't help.
"It was too reflective," Rob said. "All it was doing was bringing it all back up, not really doing anything with any of it. I was just going back over the old stuff, which was getting me more wound up again, without really moving forward."
Why a Different Approach Worked
At Newcastle Hypnotherapy, we typically only need to talk through what's happened once, just enough to understand where someone is coming from. After that, the focus shifts entirely to moving forward and building positive tools rather than dwelling on the past.
For Rob, that shift was the difference maker. Instead of repeatedly dragging up frustration, anger, and stress, sessions became about replacing negative feelings with positive ones and giving him practical techniques he could take home and practice.
The Results
The change speaks for itself. Rob's panic attacks dropped from several times a week to just two in four to five months. He described the improvement to his sleep and daily life as "massive," and it wasn't just him who noticed. His closest friend, who'd been worried enough to start texting him daily, commented on how much more positive he seemed within just a couple of sessions.
Rob worked with us using a mix of in-person and online sessions. He preferred meeting face-to-face for the first and last sessions to build that connection, but found the online sessions just as effective in between; proof that hypnotherapy can work well whichever format suits you.
His Advice to Anyone on the Fence
Rob admitted he was sceptical going in, having heard mixed things about mental health treatment from friends and colleagues. Looking back, his advice to his hesitant former self was simple:
"Stop messing about and get in touch. I wish I'd found out about you a year ago, because it made such a difference."
