How Mary Overcame Workplace Anxiety and Daily Panic Attacks: A Real Anxiety Treatment Case Study
Mary's Story: From Daily Panic Attacks to a Confident, Anxiety-Free Life
Workplace anxiety is one of the most common forms of anxiety we treat here at Newcastle Hypnotherapy. It can start quietly and grow into something that affects every part of a person's life. This is Mary's story, and it is one that stays with me.

When Workplace Anxiety Becomes Overwhelming
Mary came to us at a point of crisis. A professional woman managing a small team, she had worked for her company for over a decade. She was well-liked, respected by her team, and regularly praised during her appraisals. But over the six months before she walked through our door, her life had been turned upside down.
Her anxiety had become so severe that she was taking days off work each week. Her sleep was badly disturbed. Panic attacks were happening every single day. On top of this, her body was responding to the chronic stress with stomach issues, bloating, and persistent headaches.
None of this had come from nowhere.
The Event That Started It All
A temporary manager had been brought in to review work efficiency. For reasons that were never made clear, he took a strong dislike to Mary. One day, he criticised her publicly in front of her entire team. Then he did it again the next day. And the day after that. For a full week, he repeatedly knocked her confidence, told her she was managing her team badly, and made her look inadequate in front of the very people she led.
The temporary manager eventually moved on to other departments. But the damage did not move with him.
Every evening, Mary would lie in bed and replay those traumatic events over and over in her mind. Every morning, on her way to work, the same thoughts would return. "What if he comes back?" "What if my own manager starts doing the same thing?" The workplace anxiety had taken root, and it was growing.
Mary's own manager had been wonderfully supportive, reassuring her that she was doing a great job and that the temporary manager's criticism was simply unjust. He was so concerned about her that he recommended she come and see us. Another member of staff had already benefited from our anxiety treatment, and he hoped the same would be true for Mary.
Mary's First Session: Honesty and Uncertainty
When Mary arrived for her first session, she was understandably cautious. She was very uncertain about whether therapy could help her at all. She had already convinced herself that the only way forward was to leave her job entirely. The problem was that her anxiety had also taken away the confidence she needed to look for something new. She felt completely stuck.
She sat down and told me everything. The public criticism. The sleepless nights. The replaying of events. The dread of going into work each morning. She talked, and I listened carefully. When she had finished, I told her something very important.
"Mary, when you change your perception, you will change your world and your thoughts."
Then I gave her an exercise to carry out every single evening and every morning on her commute to work, to replace the negative "what if" loop that had become her daily routine.
The Simple Exercise That Changed Everything
The exercise was straightforward, but please do not let its simplicity fool you into underestimating it.
Every evening, before bed, I asked Mary to write down every single win from her day. Not just the big moments. The small ones, too. Getting to work on time. Remembering to pack her lunch. How warmly she had greeted her team. A task completed. A problem solved. Every win, no matter how small, was to be written down.
Then I asked her to write down everything she liked and valued about her job.
Mary looked at me with genuine uncertainty. She did not think this would help. But she agreed to try.
One Week Later: A Different Person Walked Through the Door
At her next session, the energy in the room had completely changed. Mary had a smile on her face as she sat down and opened her notepad.
She began to read out her wins, one by one. The list was remarkable. She talked about getting to work on time. She talked about walking her team through a brand new project, how clearly she had explained every detail, how she had answered every question with confidence, how she had stepped in and resolved a conflict between two of her team members. She spoke about a meeting with her manager where she had been praised for her performance.
Then she moved on to everything she valued about her job. Her team, every single one of them by name. Her manager. The flexible working arrangements. The pay structure. The pension. The health plan. The generous holiday allowance. The staff parties. And so much more.
Mary's delivery took over an hour. Every word of it was filled with warmth, pride, and genuine happiness.
The Results Spoke for Themselves
Mary's anxiety had reduced so quickly and so visibly that her manager noticed the transformation almost immediately. He was so impressed that he asked her to present this very exercise to the whole company at their annual conference.
I only needed a few more sessions with Mary after that to ensure the changes were permanent. Her anxiety was gone. Her confidence at work was nothing short of remarkable.
At our final session, I asked Mary what the most important thing was that she had taken from the whole experience.
She smiled and said: "If you change your perception, you will change your world and your thoughts."
Then she gave me the biggest hug.
What Mary's Story Tells Us About Anxiety Treatment
Mary's case is a powerful example of how workplace anxiety and panic attacks do not have to define your life. The anxiety was real. The panic attacks were real. The suffering was real. But so was the recovery.
What changed for Mary was not her job, not her manager, and not the situation at work. What changed was the way she saw herself, her value, and her world. Effective anxiety treatment works not by removing all difficulty from life, but by changing the way the mind processes and responds to it.
If you are experiencing workplace anxiety, daily panic attacks, disturbed sleep, or an anxiety that is beginning to affect your physical health and your confidence, please know that help is available and that change is absolutely possible.
